Year 4 have been reading ‘The Song of the Dolphin Boy’ by Elizabeth Laird. The book has a very strong message about the dangers of plastic pollution in the ocean which we decided to study in class in our English lessons. The children researched facts about the oceans and the sealife that live in them. They learnt how plastic is made and discussed all the different uses for plastic.
Then they looked at the way plastic finds its way into waterways, rivers, seas and oceans, causing problems for water quality, wildlife and, ultimately, human beings. Finally, the children considered the ways in which we can all play a part in halting the pollution, clearing up the existing rubbish and guarding against it happening in the future.
The children created Powerpoint presentations which you can view below. Esme has also written a story entitled ‘Plastic Problems! Bob’s Three Bottles’.
